Desktop power supply replacement, on site
My desktop restarts on its own, will not turn on or the power supply has started making noise.

My desktop restarts on its own, will not turn on or the power supply has started making noise.
The power supply inside a desktop converts mains power into the lower voltages the computer uses, and it wears out like any other part. Signs include random restarts when the computer is busy, a machine that will not start or only starts on the second attempt, a loud or rattling fan, or a hot smell. Because these symptoms can also come from the motherboard or other parts, we test the power supply first so you are not replacing the wrong part.
What the technician does
- Test the power supply and rule out other faults
- Fit a replacement with the right capacity and connectors
- Tidy the cabling and test the computer under load
If you smell burning or see smoke, switch the computer off at the wall and leave it off until it is checked.
About desktop power supply replacement
If the power supply is the problem, we fit a quality replacement with enough capacity for the computer's parts, plus headroom if a graphics card upgrade is planned. All of the work happens inside the computer case on its own internal connectors - nothing is changed in your building's wiring. Cables are routed tidily for airflow, and the computer is run under load to confirm it stays stable before we hand it back.
What usually causes it
- An ageing power supply with a worn fan or failing components
- A power cut or surge that damaged the unit
- Extra drives or a new graphics card drawing more power than it can supply
- Dust build-up causing it to overheat
Before we arrive
- The make and model of the computer, or a photo of the label underneath or on the back
- What you use it for and what feels slow
- Your Windows sign-in and any software licence details you have
- A rough idea of whether you would rather upgrade or are open to replacing
What a visit looks like
When you book desktop power supply replacement, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Desktop power supply replacement: questions
Can a failing power supply damage other parts?
It can. A poor quality or failing unit can deliver unstable power to the motherboard and drives. Replacing it early is safer than waiting for it to stop completely.
Does this involve any electrical work in my home or office?
No. The power supply sits inside the computer case and plugs into an ordinary power point. If a power point itself is faulty, a registered electrician should look at it.
Do you do desktop power supply replacement on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does desktop power supply replacement cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
