Computer upgrades for desktops and laptops

SSDs, memory, Windows 11, graphics cards and power supplies fitted - with honest upgrade-or-replace advice.

Laptop and Wi-Fi router set up on a desk at home

Many slow computers do not need replacing. A solid state drive, more memory or a clean move to Windows 11 can give a desktop or laptop a useful second life, and a desktop can often take a better graphics card or a sturdier power supply too. We check what your machine will actually accept, tell you plainly when an upgrade is not worth doing, and fit the parts onsite with your files and programs carried across.

From $135 + GST + $30 call-out ($185.25 incl. GST)

  • A compatibility check before any part is ordered
  • Your data backed up or cloned before the drive is touched
  • The computer tested with your usual programs afterwards

Signs you need computer upgrades

  • The computer takes a long time to start and programs are slow to open
  • The hard drive light stays on constantly and everything waits on it
  • Windows says the computer does not meet the requirements for Windows 11
  • The desktop struggles with design, video or CAD work it used to handle
  • The power supply is noisy, smells hot or the computer restarts under load

How we do it

Every upgrade starts with a look at what the computer can actually take. We identify the exact model, processor, motherboard and current parts, check how much memory the board supports, whether there is a spare slot for a solid state drive and whether the case and power supply can handle a better graphics card. We also look at the age of the machine and what you use it for. If the processor is the real bottleneck or Windows 11 is out of reach, we tell you before you spend anything.

When an upgrade makes sense, your data comes first. The existing drive is cloned or backed up before it is replaced, so Windows, programs and files carry across unchanged. Parts are fitted onsite, drivers and firmware updated, and the computer tested with the programs you rely on - including a longer run under load for graphics and power supply work. Old parts are handed back to you, and the original drive stays as a second copy until you are sure everything is present.

Specific computer upgrades jobs

Computer Upgrades for businesses

In an office, several computers of similar age often share the same slowdown. Fitting solid state drives and extra memory across a group of desktops can be a sensible way to get more life from hardware that is otherwise sound, and moving them to Windows 11 keeps them on a supported system. We look at each machine individually, flag the ones that are not worth upgrading, and plan the work so staff are not all without a computer at once.

Computer Upgrades at home

For a home computer, an upgrade is often the difference between putting up with a slow machine and enjoying it again. A family desktop or an older laptop with a good processor can feel much quicker with a solid state drive, and a gaming or editing desktop may just need a better graphics card and a power supply to match. We give you a straight answer about whether it is worth doing, then fit everything at your place.

Before we arrive

To make the visit quick, it helps to have these ready:

  • The make and model of the computer, or a photo of the label underneath or on the back
  • What you use it for and what feels slow
  • Your Windows sign-in and any software licence details you have
  • A rough idea of whether you would rather upgrade or are open to replacing

What a visit looks like

When you book computer upgrades, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Computer Upgrades: common questions

Is it worth upgrading an old computer?

It depends on the processor and what you use it for. A machine with a reasonable processor and an old spinning hard drive often feels new with an SSD. One that cannot run Windows 11 or has a very old processor is usually better replaced, and we will say so.

Will I lose my files and programs when the drive is changed?

No. We clone the old drive to the new SSD, so Windows, your programs, email and files all come across as they were. The old drive is handed back to you, so there is a second copy until you are sure everything is there.

Can you upgrade a laptop as well as a desktop?

Often, but laptops vary. Many still accept a new SSD and extra memory, while thinner models have memory soldered to the board. We check the exact model first so you are not buying parts that will not fit.

My computer says it cannot run Windows 11. Is there anything you can do?

Sometimes the check fails because a setting such as TPM or Secure Boot is switched off, which we can turn on. If the processor itself is not supported, we explain the options, including whether replacing the computer makes more sense.
