Retail and point-of-sale IT

Tills, card terminals, printers and networks that keep trading.

When the till stops, the shop stops. Point-of-sale computers, receipt and kitchen printers, barcode scanners, card terminals and the network linking them all have to work on a busy Saturday. We install and network POS gear, put card terminals and tills on a cabled network apart from guest Wi-Fi, fix printers that drop off and test a full sale from scan to receipt before we leave.

  • A test sale run from scan to receipt
  • POS devices cabled where the layout allows
  • Network ports and IP addresses written down

Signs you need retail & point-of-sale IT

  • The receipt or kitchen printer drops off several times a day
  • Card terminals lose connection at the busiest moments
  • Customers on the free Wi-Fi share a network with your tills
  • A new store opening needs tills, network and cameras ready
  • Staff restart the POS computer as a fix, and it keeps coming back

How we do it

Retail IT problems usually show up at the counter but start in the back office. We look at how the tills, printers and card terminals connect - whether they are on Wi-Fi or cable, what addresses they use, and what else shares the network. Moving counter devices onto cabled connections with fixed addresses, and putting guest Wi-Fi on its own network, removes most of the faults that cause lost sales.

For a new store or a refit we work from the counter layout. We plan where tills, printers, scanners and cameras will sit, run the cabling, install the network gear in a secure spot and connect each device. Before opening we ring through test sales, print receipts and kitchen tickets, and check that a card payment goes through, so your first real customer is not the test.

Specific retail & point-of-sale IT jobs

Retail & Point-of-Sale IT for businesses

For shops, cafes and restaurants, the aim is a counter that keeps taking money. That means cabled tills, printers that stay online, a guest network kept apart from payments, and where it matters a backup internet connection so a fibre outage does not close the till. We work before opening or after close so trading is never interrupted. Changes are tested with a real sale before staff take over.

Before we arrive

To make the visit quick, it helps to have these ready:

  • The name and support contact of your POS software provider
  • Your counter and kitchen layout, with where each device goes
  • Router and Wi-Fi admin logins
  • Your opening or relaunch date

What a visit looks like

When you book retail & point-of-sale IT, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Pricing

Each retail & point-of-sale IT job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.

There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.

Retail & Point-of-Sale IT: common questions

Do you supply the POS software?

No. You choose the POS software and its provider. We set up the hardware, network and printers it runs on and work alongside the software provider's support team when they need hands on site.

Why does our receipt printer keep going offline?

Usually because it sits on Wi-Fi or its IP address keeps changing. Moving it to a cable and giving it a fixed address on the network stops most dropouts.

Can you work before we open?

Yes. Retail installs and changes can be arranged before opening or after closing so the counter is never out of action while customers are waiting.
