Business internet and automatic failover

A second internet connection that takes over when fibre drops.

When the fibre goes down, so do cloud software, EFTPOS, VoIP calls and email. Failover adds a second connection - 4G/5G, Starlink or a second fibre from a different provider - and a dual-WAN router or firewall that switches over automatically. We install the backup link, set the failover and load-balancing rules, and pull the plug on the main connection to prove it works.

  • Failover tested by disconnecting the main link
  • Priority rules set for the systems that matter most
  • Both connections and their account details recorded

Signs you need business internet & failover

  • Staff go home when the internet drops because nothing works
  • EFTPOS or point-of-sale stops taking cards during an outage
  • Your business runs on cloud software and VoIP calls
  • The building has one fibre connection and no backup
  • A previous outage cost a day of sales or bookings

How we do it

First we look at how the site connects today and what an outage actually stops. That tells us how much backup capacity is needed and which systems must stay up. We test mobile signal at the router position for 4G/5G, check sky view if Starlink is an option, and find out whether a second fibre provider can bring a line in by a different route. The router or firewall must support dual WAN and failover.

We install the backup connection with any external antenna or dish mounting it needs, then configure health checks so the router notices when the main link stops passing traffic, not just when the cable is unplugged. Priority rules keep EFTPOS, VoIP and business apps on the backup and keep large downloads off it. To finish, we disconnect the main link, confirm everything moves across, and restore it.

Specific business internet & failover jobs

Business Internet & Failover for businesses

For retail, hospitality, clinics and offices running cloud software, an internet outage stops the business as surely as a power cut. A properly configured failover keeps payments, bookings, calls and email working through a fibre fault or a cable dug up down the road. It also covers you during a provider change or an office move, when the new line is not quite ready.

Before we arrive

To make the visit quick, it helps to have these ready:

  • Account details for your current internet connection
  • Admin access to the router or firewall
  • A list of systems that must keep working in an outage
  • Where a 4G/5G antenna or Starlink dish could be mounted

What a visit looks like

When you book business internet & failover, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Pricing

Each business internet & failover job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.

There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.

Business Internet & Failover: common questions

Which backup connection should we choose?

It depends on the site. 4G/5G suits most urban offices with good mobile signal. Starlink suits rural sites or places with weak coverage. A second fibre from a different provider makes sense where both lines take different routes into the building.

Will the switch-over be noticeable?

Browsing and cloud apps usually carry on after a short pause. Some live sessions, such as VPNs or calls, may reconnect. We set the router to detect a failure quickly and switch back once the main link is healthy.

Can the backup connection be limited to stop large bills?

Yes. We can restrict which devices and traffic use the backup link, so updates and video streaming stay off it while EFTPOS, email and business software keep working.
