Business Internet & Failover
Backup internet for EFTPOS, on site
When our internet goes down we cannot take card payments.
When our internet goes down we cannot take card payments.
Many shops, cafes and clinics run EFTPOS terminals and point-of-sale software over the same internet connection as everything else. When fibre drops, payments stop. Some terminals have their own mobile backup, many do not, and the POS software may need the internet regardless. A backup that keeps payments running can also carry the POS software, online orders and staff rosters, so the counter keeps working while the main line is repaired. It does not need to be fast, only reliable.
What the technician does
- Check how your terminals and POS connect to the network
- Add a 4G/5G or other backup connection with automatic failover
- Test card payments with the main link unplugged
Ask your payment provider whether your terminals also have their own built-in mobile backup.
About backup internet for EFTPOS
We map how each terminal and POS station connects, then install a backup connection on a dual-WAN router or firewall. Priority rules keep payment traffic on the backup and stop updates or streaming using it. We test by unplugging the main connection and running a real or test transaction, then document how the failover works so staff know what to expect.
What usually causes it
- Lost sales during a fibre outage
- Single internet connection with no backup
- Terminals without their own mobile connection
- Busy periods where an outage would be costly
Before we arrive
- Account details for your current internet connection
- Admin access to the router or firewall
- A list of systems that must keep working in an outage
- Where a 4G/5G antenna or Starlink dish could be mounted
What a visit looks like
When you book backup internet for EFTPOS, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Backup internet for EFTPOS: questions
Does the backup work for both EFTPOS and the POS software?
Yes, if both connect through the router we set up for failover. We check each device's connection path so nothing is left out. Card readers that connect by Wi-Fi to a base are included in the same check.
What if mobile signal is weak inside the shop?
An external antenna mounted higher or outside usually improves signal a lot. Starlink is another option where mobile coverage is poor. We test signal at the router position before suggesting either option.
Do you do backup internet for EFTPOS on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does backup internet for EFTPOS cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
