POS and guest Wi-Fi network separation, on site

Customers on our free Wi-Fi are on the same network as our tills and card terminals.

Customers on our free Wi-Fi are on the same network as our tills and card terminals.

Many small shops and cafes run everything on one network: tills, card terminals, the office computer, cameras and customer Wi-Fi. That means a customer's infected laptop can see the till, and a busy guest network can slow down payments. We list every device and work out which ones belong on the POS network, the staff network and the guest network.

What the technician does

  1. Map every device on the current network
  2. Create separate networks for POS, staff and guests
  3. Move each device and test sales and guest internet

Change the guest Wi-Fi password if it has been printed on the counter for years.

About POS and guest Wi-Fi network separation

Using the existing router where it is capable, or a business router or switch where it is not, we set up separate networks and move devices across. Guests get internet access only, with no route to your tills. We then run test sales, print receipts and connect as a guest to confirm each network does its job and nothing else.

What usually causes it

  • Free customer Wi-Fi was added on the main business network
  • The router supplied by the internet provider has limited network options
  • A security review or payment provider asked about network separation
  • Customers' devices are slowing down the tills

What a visit looks like

When you book POS and guest Wi-Fi network separation, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

POS and guest Wi-Fi network separation: questions

Do we need new equipment?

Not always. Some routers can run separate networks already. If yours cannot, a small business router or managed switch does the job, and we explain the options first.

Will customers notice any change?

Usually only that the guest Wi-Fi has a new name or password. Their internet access works the same, just without any route to your business devices.

Do you do POS and guest Wi-Fi network separation on site?

Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.

How much does POS and guest Wi-Fi network separation cost?

It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
