Fibre Optic Cabling
Fibre to a workshop or yard office, on site
The workshop at the back of the site needs proper network access but it is too far for normal cable.
The workshop at the back of the site needs proper network access but it is too far for normal cable.
Workshops, yard offices and dispatch sheds often end up with a Wi-Fi bridge that drops when a truck parks in the way, or a copper cable buried directly in the ground. Fibre suits these runs: it handles long distances, is not affected by machinery or welders nearby, and does not create an electrical path between buildings that can carry a surge.
What the technician does
- Measure the route and check for existing ducts or conduit
- Install outdoor or duct-rated fibre and terminate both ends
- Add a switch in the workshop and test the link
If a trench is being dug for power or water, ask for a spare duct to be laid at the same time.
About fibre to a workshop or yard office
We choose singlemode OS2 for most outdoor runs between buildings, with a sheath rated for the duct or for direct burial where appropriate. Each end lands in a small wall-mount enclosure, and a switch in the workshop feeds desks, a printer, cameras or an access point. Trenching and ducting are usually done by a civil contractor, and we pull the fibre once the duct is ready.
What usually causes it
- A wireless bridge between buildings keeps dropping out
- New workshop, dispatch office or staff room built on the site
- Buried copper cable damaged by moisture or a lightning strike
- Cameras and access points needed in the yard
Before we arrive
- A site plan showing both ends of the link
- Details of any existing ducts, pits or conduit between buildings
- The make and model of the switches at each end
- Contact for the civil contractor if new trenching is planned
What a visit looks like
When you book fibre to a workshop or yard office, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.
Pricing
Each fibre to a workshop or yard office job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.
There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.
Fibre to a workshop or yard office: questions
Can the fibre share a trench with power cables?
Fibre carries no electricity, so it can share a trench, but it must be in its own duct and placed according to the separation the electrician and civil contractor require.
Is a wireless bridge cheaper?
Often it is, and it can work well with clear line of sight. Fibre makes more sense where sight lines are blocked, vehicles move between buildings or the link must not drop.
Do you do fibre to a workshop or yard office on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does fibre to a workshop or yard office cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
