Smart Home Setup
Smart home troubleshooting, on site
Devices keep dropping off and routines don't run.
Devices keep dropping off and routines don't run.
When smart devices drop off, the cause is often outside the devices themselves. We check Wi-Fi coverage in the rooms where devices live, the number of connected devices on the router, and whether band steering or mesh nodes are causing them to roam. Many smart devices only use 2.4 GHz and struggle with crowded channels, so we look at interference and channel settings too.
What the technician does
- Check Wi-Fi coverage and device settings
- Fix or re-add problem devices
- Simplify routines so they're reliable
Weak Wi-Fi is behind most smart home problems.
About smart home troubleshooting
Next we look at the platforms. Duplicate devices in Google Home or Alexa, broken account links, expired cloud integrations and routines relying on devices that no longer exist are common. We remove or re-add problem devices, update firmware, and rebuild routines so they have fewer dependencies. Where a hub or mesh would make a real difference, we explain the options rather than adding gear for the sake of it.
What usually causes it
- Devices showing offline in the app
- Routines failing silently
- A new router changing the Wi-Fi name or password
- Too many apps and hubs from different brands
- Weak signal in garages, outdoor areas or far rooms
Before we arrive
- The devices and their apps
- Your Wi-Fi name and password
- The account you want everything linked to
- A list of the routines you would like
What a visit looks like
When you book smart home troubleshooting, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.
Pricing
Each smart home troubleshooting job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.
There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.
Smart home troubleshooting: questions
Should we replace our router to fix smart devices?
Not always. Sometimes a settings change, a separate 2.4 GHz network or an extra mesh node is enough. We test coverage and only recommend new hardware when the current router cannot cope.
Can devices from different brands work together?
Often through Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home or the Matter standard. Some older devices only work in their own app. We map what you have and connect what can be connected.
Do you do smart home troubleshooting on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does smart home troubleshooting cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
