Network Health Check & Documentation
Network cabling audit, on site
You've taken over a building and don't know what cabling you have.
You've taken over a building and don't know what cabling you have.
An audit starts in the comms cupboard and works outward. We count the patch panel ports, test a sample or all of the runs, trace where outlets land and note the cable category printed on the jacket. Old Cat5, coax, phone cabling and abandoned runs are recorded so you know what is live and what is just clutter. Ceiling spaces are checked for loose or damaged runs.
What the technician does
- Inspect and test the existing cabling
- Map it to a floor plan
- Recommend what to keep, fix or replace
Handy before an office fit-out or a move.
About network cabling audit
The findings are mapped onto your floor plan with outlet numbers, cable type and test status. We then recommend what to keep, what to re-terminate and what to replace - for example keeping sound Cat6 runs, removing redundant phone cable and upgrading the backbone to fibre. That gives you a clear scope to take into a fit-out, a lease negotiation or a budget discussion.
What usually causes it
- Taking over a lease with cabling of unknown age
- Planning a fit-out or desk layout change
- Mixed cabling from several past contractors
- Faults that keep returning on certain points
Before we arrive
- Any existing logins, passwords or notes from previous IT help
- Access to the comms cupboard, server room and ceiling spaces
- A list of known problems and when they tend to happen
- Details of your internet provider and connection type
What a visit looks like
When you book network cabling audit, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.
Pricing
Each network cabling audit job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.
There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.
Network cabling audit: questions
Do you test every cable in an audit?
That depends on the purpose. For a quick picture we test a representative sample; if you are making decisions about keeping or replacing cabling, we test every run so the recommendations are backed by results.
Can old phone cabling be reused for data?
Usually not. Phone cable is rarely rated for gigabit Ethernet. We note where it can be removed and where it could serve as a draw wire for new cable.
Do you do network cabling audit on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does network cabling audit cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
