IT handover from a previous provider, on site
Our old IT provider has gone and we do not have the passwords or know how things are set up.
Our old IT provider has gone and we do not have the passwords or know how things are set up.
When a provider leaves, admin passwords often go with them. The firewall, switches, Wi-Fi controller, Microsoft 365 admin, domain registrar and backup portal may all be locked. Until access is recovered, nobody can make changes safely, and you may be paying for services nobody is managing. Domain names are the most urgent, because an expired domain stops email and the website. Renewal dates and registrar logins come first.
What the technician does
- Find and identify every network device, server and service
- Recover or reset admin access and secure the accounts
- Document the setup and list anything urgent
Check old invoices and emails for account names, licence details and provider portals.
About IT handover from a previous provider
We locate every device and account, recover access through the proper channels or reset devices where needed, and move admin accounts to names you control. Then we document what we find: devices, settings, licences, renewal dates and backups. Anything urgent, such as unsupported firmware or failing backups, is listed first so you can decide what to fix. Old provider accounts are closed once access is confirmed.
What usually causes it
- IT provider closed or relationship ended
- In-house IT person resigned
- Business purchased with existing IT
- Admin passwords never handed over
Before we arrive
- Any existing logins, passwords or notes from previous IT help
- Access to the comms cupboard, server room and ceiling spaces
- A list of known problems and when they tend to happen
- Details of your internet provider and connection type
What a visit looks like
When you book IT handover from a previous provider, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.
Pricing
Each IT handover from a previous provider job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.
There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.
IT handover from a previous provider: questions
Can you get into a device without the password?
Many devices can be reset, though this clears the configuration. We record what we can see first and rebuild settings after the reset where needed.
Can you recover a Microsoft 365 admin account?
Usually, yes. If no admin access remains, Microsoft has a process to prove domain ownership and regain control, which we can work through with you.
Do you do IT handover from a previous provider on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does IT handover from a previous provider cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
