Firewall & Network Security

Replace an end-of-life firewall, on site

Our firewall is out of support and no longer gets security updates.

Our firewall is out of support and no longer gets security updates.

When a firewall reaches end of life, the vendor stops releasing firmware fixes. Any vulnerability found after that date stays open for good, and firewall flaws are among the first things attackers scan for. Replacing it is also a chance to fix things that have built up: flat networks, VPNs without multi-factor sign-in and port forwards nobody can explain. It is also worth checking whether the old unit can handle your current fibre speed with inspection turned on.

What the technician does

  1. Record the old firewall's rules, VPNs, VLANs and internet settings
  2. Build the replacement with a cleaned-up version of that configuration
  3. Swap it in at an agreed time and test every service that crosses it

Check the vendor's end-of-life list for your model - it is usually published on their website.

About replace an end-of-life firewall

We read the existing configuration in full, decide with you what should carry over, and pre-build the new firewall so the swap itself is brief. That includes internet connection settings, static IP addresses, VPN tunnels to other sites and remote users. After the cutover we test browsing, email, VPN connections, VoIP and any hosted services, then hand over the old unit's configuration export with the new documentation.

What usually causes it

  • Vendor has announced end of support for the model
  • Firmware updates are no longer available for download
  • Internet speed has outgrown what the old firewall can process
  • Remote access VPN needs multi-factor sign-in the old unit cannot do

What a visit looks like

When you book replace an end-of-life firewall, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Replace an end-of-life firewall: questions

Can the new firewall be a different brand?

Yes. Rules and VPNs are rebuilt by hand rather than copied, so changing brand is straightforward. It is also a good moment to remove settings that are no longer needed.

Will remote staff need to set up their VPN again?

Usually yes, because the VPN client and profile change with the firewall. We prepare the new profiles and can help staff connect on their laptops when the cutover happens.

Do you do replace an end-of-life firewall on site?

Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.

How much does replace an end-of-life firewall cost?

It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
