Mac Repair & Support

Mac won't start up, on site

My Mac shows a folder with a question mark, a circle with a line through it, or keeps restarting.

My Mac shows a folder with a question mark, a circle with a line through it, or keeps restarting.

Start-up symbols on a Mac each mean something specific. A question mark folder means the Mac cannot find a startup disk, a prohibited symbol suggests a damaged or incompatible system, and repeated restarts can point to software, a failing drive or a hardware fault. We use macOS Recovery and diagnostics to narrow down which it is before changing anything. Safe mode is tried as well.

What the technician does

  1. Diagnose the start-up fault using recovery tools
  2. Repair the disk or reinstall macOS without erasing files where possible
  3. Recover files first if the drive is failing

Note exactly what appears on screen at start-up - each symbol points to a different fault.

About Mac won't start up

Where the disk can be repaired, or macOS reinstalled over the top without erasing your files, we do that. If the drive is failing, the priority becomes getting files off, using recovery tools or target disk mode where the model supports it. We explain the cause and whether the Mac is worth repairing before any part is ordered. Data always comes first.

What usually causes it

  • A macOS update failed or was interrupted
  • The internal drive is failing
  • Startup disk settings were changed
  • A hardware fault on the logic board

What a visit looks like

When you book Mac won't start up, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Pricing

Each Mac won't start up job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.

There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.

Mac won't start up: questions

Will reinstalling macOS delete my files?

Not usually. A standard reinstall from macOS Recovery replaces the system and leaves your files in place, though we back them up first wherever possible.

Can files be recovered from a Mac that won't start?

Often yes, if the drive still works. Newer Macs encrypt storage on the main board, so recovery depends on the Mac powering on and your password.

Do you do Mac won't start up on site?

Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.

How much does Mac won't start up cost?

It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
