External drive not recognised, on site

My external hard drive won't show up or it asks to be formatted when I plug it in.

My external hard drive won't show up or it asks to be formatted when I plug it in.

An external drive that stops appearing is not always dead. The fault can be the USB cable, the enclosure's adaptor board or a damaged file system rather than the drive itself. We test with known-good cables and on another computer, and where it is safe, remove the drive from its case and connect it directly to see whether it can be read.

What the technician does

  1. Test the drive, cable and enclosure on another computer
  2. Check whether the fault is logical or physical
  3. Copy readable data to a new drive

Never click format when a drive asks - that can make recovery much harder.

About external drive not recognised

If the drive spins and responds normally but the file system is damaged, recovery is often possible and we copy what can be read to a new drive. If it clicks, buzzes or is not detected at all, it may have a mechanical fault. We stop at that point and explain that a specialist cleanroom lab is the next step.

What usually causes it

  • The drive was unplugged without being ejected
  • The USB cable or enclosure has failed
  • The drive was dropped or knocked while running
  • The drive is old and developing bad sectors

What a visit looks like

When you book external drive not recognised, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Pricing

Each external drive not recognised job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.

There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.

External drive not recognised: questions

Why does it ask to format the drive?

The computer cannot read the file system, so it offers to create a new one. Formatting would write over the structure we need, so click cancel and leave it unplugged.

Can a dropped drive be recovered?

Sometimes. A drop while the drive was spinning often damages the heads, which needs a specialist cleanroom lab. A drive dropped while switched off may still read.

Do you do external drive not recognised on site?

Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.

How much does external drive not recognised cost?

It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
