Reset and reissue a leaver's laptop, on site
A staff member has left and their laptop needs to be cleaned up and given to someone else.
A staff member has left and their laptop needs to be cleaned up and given to someone else.
Laptops from staff who have left often sit in a drawer still signed in to email and files. That is a security risk and a wasted device. Before resetting, it is worth checking whether anything business-related lives only on the local drive - downloads, desktop files or a local Outlook archive. Saved browser passwords and synced accounts are also worth clearing.
What the technician does
- Check for business files not yet saved to OneDrive or the server
- Remove the old account and wipe or reset the laptop
- Set it up for the new user and update the asset list
Disable the leaver's Microsoft 365 account before resetting the laptop, so their sign-in cannot be used elsewhere.
About reset and reissue a leaver's laptop
We check and move any business files with your approval, remove the old account, then reset or reimage the laptop. If you use Intune and Autopilot, the reset is done from the console and the laptop sets itself up for the next user. Otherwise we set it up by hand to your standard. The asset register is updated with the new owner.
What usually causes it
- Staff turnover
- Laptops left signed in after someone leaves
- Need to reissue hardware rather than buy new
- Audit of who has which device
Before we arrive
- The list of staff receiving a new machine and where they sit
- Installers and licence keys for any specialist software
- Admin access to Microsoft 365 or your domain
- A decision on what happens to the old computers
What a visit looks like
When you book reset and reissue a leaver's laptop, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.
Pricing
Each reset and reissue a leaver's laptop job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.
There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.
Reset and reissue a leaver's laptop: questions
Can you recover files the leaver did not save?
If the laptop has not been wiped, yes. We check the user's profile and local drives and move business files to an agreed location before resetting. Anything personal is set aside for you to return to the former staff member.
Should we keep the leaver's mailbox?
Often yes, for a period. It can be converted to a shared mailbox so a manager can access it without keeping a paid licence. Their OneDrive files can be shared with a manager before the account is removed.
Do you do reset and reissue a leaver's laptop on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does reset and reissue a leaver's laptop cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
