Move files to a new computer, on site
Your photos, documents and email are stuck on an old computer.
Your photos, documents and email are stuck on an old computer.
Files rarely live only in Documents and Pictures. We look for photos stuck in old import folders, spreadsheets saved to the desktop, scanned letters sitting in a scanner app's own folder, and anything in OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox that might not be fully downloaded. Copying is done drive to drive or across the network, then folder sizes and file counts are compared so nothing quietly drops out along the way.
What the technician does
- Copy files, photos and documents across
- Bring over email, contacts and bookmarks
- Check nothing was missed before the old machine is retired
If the old computer won't start, we can usually still recover files from its drive.
About move files to a new computer
Email is often the tricky piece. If your mail is IMAP or Microsoft 365 it re-syncs from the server, but older POP accounts keep everything in a local file that has to be moved by hand. Bookmarks and saved passwords export differently in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Some programs, such as accounting software or old photo editors, need reinstalling and reactivating rather than copying, so we sort out which is which.
What usually causes it
- New computer bought and the old one is being retired
- Years of family photos with no other copy
- Old POP email stored only on the old machine
- Old computer no longer starts but the drive is still readable
Before we arrive
- The device that needs help, plus its charger
- Any passwords you know, even if you are not sure they are right
- A list of what you would like sorted while we are there
- Your internet provider details if the Wi-Fi is part of the problem
What a visit looks like
When you book move files to a new computer, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Each move files to a new computer job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.
There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.
Move files to a new computer: questions
Can you move files from a Mac to a Windows computer, or the other way?
Yes. Documents, photos and music move across fine. Apple Mail and Photos libraries need exporting into formats Windows can open, and some apps have no equivalent, so we suggest a replacement where needed.
How do I know nothing was missed?
We compare folder sizes and file counts between the two machines and check the usual hiding places. The old computer stays untouched until you've opened your important files on the new one and are happy.
Do you do move files to a new computer on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does move files to a new computer cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
