Home computer tune-up, on site

The family computer has got slow and cluttered over the years.

The family computer has got slow and cluttered over the years.

A family computer that several people have installed things on tends to collect browser toolbars, three PDF readers, old printer software and start-up programs that load before anyone has signed in. We review what runs at start-up, remove what isn't needed, clear temporary files and look for leftovers from previous security products, which commonly drag performance down without anyone noticing. Nothing you still use gets removed without asking.

What the technician does

  1. Remove junk, start-up clutter and unwanted programs
  2. Run updates and check the drive's health
  3. Suggest an upgrade only if it would really help

A drive health check tells us whether a slow computer is about to fail.

About home computer tune-up

The drive's SMART data tells us whether it is wearing out, and that matters more than any clean-up. We also check free space, Windows Update status and whether the machine can run a supported version of Windows. If it's an older model with a spinning drive, we'll explain honestly whether an SSD would give it a few more good years or whether the money is better put toward a replacement.

What usually causes it

  • Start-up taking minutes rather than seconds
  • Pop-ups and toolbars added by free downloads
  • Windows updates stuck or failing
  • Drive almost full
  • Several family members sharing one account

Before we arrive

  • The device that needs help, plus its charger
  • Any passwords you know, even if you are not sure they are right
  • A list of what you would like sorted while we are there
  • Your internet provider details if the Wi-Fi is part of the problem

What a visit looks like

When you book home computer tune-up, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Each home computer tune-up job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.

Home computer tune-up: questions

Will a tune-up delete my files?

No. A tune-up removes unwanted programs and temporary files, not your documents or photos. We check with you before removing any program you might still use, and back up first if the drive shows warning signs.

Can you set up separate accounts for each family member?

Yes. Separate accounts keep each person's files, email and browser apart, and children's accounts can use Microsoft Family Safety settings. It also stops one person's downloads affecting everyone else on the computer.

Do you do home computer tune-up on site?

Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.

How much does home computer tune-up cost?

It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
