School BYOD laptop setup, on site
Our child's school needs them to bring their own laptop, and we are not sure how to get it ready.

Our child's school needs them to bring their own laptop, and we are not sure how to get it ready.
Schools that ask students to bring their own laptop or Chromebook usually publish a list of requirements: a minimum specification, an operating system, the school's Wi-Fi setup, a sign-in through Microsoft 365 or Google, and sometimes a particular app or certificate. We read through those requirements with you, check the laptop meets them and get it set up so it connects at school on the first day rather than spending the first lesson with the school IT team.
What the technician does
- Check the school's device list, Wi-Fi and portal requirements
- Set up the Microsoft 365 or Google school sign-in and required apps
- Add parental controls, antivirus and a backup, then show the student around
Bring the school's BYOD letter or web page - it lists the exact requirements.

About school BYOD laptop setup
We sign the student in with their school account, install Office or set up Google Workspace as the school expects, and add any learning apps on the list. At home, parental controls are set to suit your family, antivirus and updates are switched on, and schoolwork is backed up to the cloud so a dropped laptop does not mean lost assignments. We finish by walking the student through signing in, saving work and finding files.
What usually causes it
- Starting at a school with a bring-your-own-device policy
- Moving from a shared family computer to a student laptop
- A new laptop that will not connect to the school portal
- Parents wanting sensible controls on a student's device
Before we arrive
- The device that needs help, plus its charger
- Any passwords you know, even if you are not sure they are right
- A list of what you would like sorted while we are there
- Your internet provider details if the Wi-Fi is part of the problem
What a visit looks like
When you book school BYOD laptop setup, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

School BYOD laptop setup: questions
Which devices do you set up?
Windows laptops, MacBooks and Chromebooks. We do not set up other mobile devices, so if the school list allows several types, we suggest a laptop or Chromebook.
Can you connect it to the school Wi-Fi?
School Wi-Fi often needs the student's own login on site, so we set up everything required beforehand and leave clear instructions for the first sign-in at school.
Do you do school BYOD laptop setup on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does school BYOD laptop setup cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
