Overheating laptop fix, on site
The laptop is hot, loud, and shuts itself down.
The laptop is hot, loud, and shuts itself down.
Heat problems build slowly. Dust and pet hair mat across the heatsink fins, the fan spins harder to compensate, and eventually the processor throttles or the laptop shuts down to protect itself. We log temperatures and fan speeds before opening anything, so there's a baseline to compare against. Then the base comes off, the fans are cleaned and the fins cleared, with each fan held still so it can't over-spin.
What the technician does
- Open and clean the fans and vents
- Replace dried-out thermal paste
- Test temperatures under load
Dust build-up is the usual cause, especially in homes with pets.
About overheating laptop fix
Thermal paste between the processor and heatsink dries out, especially on laptops several years old, so we clean it off and apply fresh compound. On some models thermal pads on the memory or power stage need replacing as well. A noisy fan gets checked for worn bearings. We then load-test the laptop and compare temperatures with the earlier readings, so the improvement is measured rather than assumed.
What usually causes it
- Dust and pet hair blocking fans
- Laptop used on a bed, couch or lap
- Dried thermal paste on an older machine
- Worn or failing fan
- Heavy workloads such as games or long video calls
Before we arrive
- The computer and its charger
- Your Windows or Mac login password
- A note of any error messages you have seen
- A backup of anything important, if the computer still works
What a visit looks like
When you book overheating laptop fix, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Overheating laptop fix: questions
Will a laptop cooling pad fix it?
It can help a little, especially on soft surfaces, but it won't clear dust packed inside the heatsink. If the laptop is already shutting itself down, it needs cleaning, not just more airflow underneath.
Can't I just blow out the vents with compressed air?
That shifts some loose dust, but often packs the rest further into the heatsink and can spin the fan dangerously fast. Opening the base is the only way to clear a matted heatsink properly.
