Computer & Laptop Repair

SSD upgrade, on site

You want an older computer to feel fast again.

You want an older computer to feel fast again.

Not every SSD fits every computer. Older laptops take a 2.5-inch SATA drive, newer ones use M.2 slots that may be SATA or NVMe, and a few models use proprietary connectors. We check the exact slot, the interface it supports and whether there's a spare bay for a second drive. Desktops are usually easier, though an older motherboard may not start from an NVMe drive without an adapter or BIOS change.

What the technician does

  1. Check the computer can take an SSD
  2. Copy everything to the new SSD so nothing changes but the speed
  3. Test and return the old drive to you

Most laptops and desktops from the last ten years can take an SSD.

About SSD upgrade

The upgrade is a clone, not a fresh start: everything on the old drive is copied to the new one, so your programs, files and settings come across untouched. Before cloning we check the old drive's health, because a failing drive may not clone cleanly and may need files rescued separately. Afterwards we confirm the SSD is running in the right mode and that you have generous free space.

What usually causes it

  • Computer takes minutes to start
  • Programs slow to open on an otherwise decent machine
  • Old hard drive showing early signs of wear
  • Wanting more life out of a computer before replacing it

Before we arrive

  • Your Windows or Mac login password

  • A backup of anything important, if the computer still works

What a visit looks like

When you book SSD upgrade, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.

On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.

When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.

Pricing

Each SSD upgrade job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.

There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.

SSD upgrade: questions

What size SSD should I get?

Look at how much space you use now and allow comfortable room to grow. For most home and office machines, double your current usage is a sensible starting point. SSDs also slow down when nearly full.

Can I keep my old hard drive as extra storage?

In a desktop, often yes, as a second internal drive. In a laptop with only one bay, we can put it in a USB enclosure so it becomes a portable backup drive instead.

Do you do SSD upgrade on site?

Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.

How much does SSD upgrade cost?

It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
