After-hours Onsite IT
Weekend server migration, on site
We need to move our files off an old server and can't afford staff being locked out during the week.
We need to move our files off an old server and can't afford staff being locked out during the week.
Most of a server migration happens quietly in the background. We copy the bulk of the data to the new server or cloud storage while the office runs normally, which can take some time for large shares. The after-hours window is then only needed for the final sync of recent changes, the switchover of drive mappings and permissions, and testing that everything opens. Shortcuts and mapped drives are noted too.
What the technician does
- Copy data across ahead of time while staff still work
- Run a final sync and switch over outside trading hours
- Remap drives and test files open on workstations
Ask staff to save and close everything before they leave on the last working day.
About weekend server migration
The testing is done the way staff work. We sign in to a few workstations, open documents from each shared folder, check that permissions are right for different teams and confirm that any software that relies on the server can still find its data. The old server stays switched off but intact until you are confident nothing was missed. Your contact gets a short summary of the new paths.
What usually causes it
- The old server is out of support or its drives are ageing
- The business is moving files to Microsoft 365 or a new NAS
- Storage has run out and the server cannot be expanded
- A line-of-business application needs a newer server
Before we arrive
- Building access, keys and alarm codes arranged with management
- Admin logins for the systems being changed
- A contact who can answer questions on the night
- A list of systems that must be working first thing
What a visit looks like
When you book weekend server migration, you tell us what's going on and we reply with a time that suits you and a price. Nothing starts until you're happy with both.
On the day, the technician arrives, looks at the problem in person and confirms the plan with you before starting. If something turns out different from what was expected - a part is needed, or the cause is somewhere else - we stop and agree the change with you first.
When the work is done we test it with you, show you what was changed, and leave the area tidy. For business jobs we note what we did, so there is a record for whoever looks after your IT next.
Pricing
Each weekend server migration job is priced before work starts. The price depends on what's involved - the size of the site, the equipment, and whether parts are needed - so the quickest way to a number is to tell us about the job on the booking form.
There is no contract and no monthly fee. You book the job you need and pay for that job.
Weekend server migration: questions
Will drive letters change for staff?
Not unless you want them to. We usually keep the same drive letters and folder names so staff see the same structure on Monday, even though the files now live somewhere new.
How do we know nothing was lost?
We compare file counts and sizes between the old and new locations and spot-check folders with you. The old server is kept intact until you sign off that everything is there.
Do you do weekend server migration on site?
Yes. We come to businesses and homes across Auckland and Hamilton and do the work where the equipment is.
How much does weekend server migration cost?
It depends on what's involved. Tell us about the job on the form and we'll confirm the price before any work starts.
